As I was posting my Weekly Wednesday Wrap-Up a few days ago I was very touched by the vegan bake sales going on around the US to raise money for the victims of the devastating earthquake in the already impoverished nation of Haiti. My feelings of needing to do something, anything, was overwhelming. I kept saying to myself how much I wished I could take part in those vegan bake sales so I could do my part to help the survivors of this tragedy.
And then I realized….I can help.
Starting today and lasting until February 1st, 100% of the profits I make through my bakery, Voracious, will be matched by me and my family and donated to In Defense of Animals: Animal Disaster Relief Fund.
IDA, as part of a large group effort of animal protection organizations known collectively as the Animal Relief Coalition of Haiti, is sending an animal disaster relief team of veterinarians, animal disaster responders, food, medical supplies, and a fully stocked animal emergency response clinic, to the most devastated earthquake zone. They will be working with local Haitian veterinarians to begin their life saving work.
“Our immediate need is for your financial support to help us meet the commitment we have already made – and future needs that are certain to follow as this unprecedented tragedy continues to unfold. Numerous supplies are needed for the mobile clinic – food, water, medicine, syringes, bandages, and more.” ~ Elliot Katz, President, In Defense of Animals
As a vegan, whenever I see natural disasters, or man made disasters like war, my first thoughts always turn to the animal victims, and I wonder what they must think about their whole lives being torn apart and demolished in such a short time. Not only do they not understand what is going on, they also don’t have the ability to ask for our help. Many times they are overlooked in the understandably panicked attempt to rescue as many human victims as possible, but luckily there are groups like IDA who will never forget these most helpless of victims.
I have a personal relationship with the awesome IDA organization, and I spoke to the President, Dr. Katz, by email, to let him know of my plans. I have the utmost confidence in the amazing spirit and ability of their latest effort and I hope you will help me get the word out.
If you live here in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and would like to place an order from my vegan bakery please contact me as soon as possible and order as much as you can! Remember, 100% of the profits will be matched by me and then donated to the IDA relief effort.
Wherever you are, if you are financially able to make a contribution to help this cause, please do!
Please feel free to re-post, link to, or tweet, about this fund raising effort. Thank you!

thank you for this post. I wish I was able to donate more. And I can’t donate to vegan bake sales either, since they don’t take my unbaked treats. But I will pass this on. great info.
What a great post, thanks for making us aware of this, Natasha!
Very cool idea. Hope you guys get a lot of support!

Great endeavor girl. What a great organization and cause. You are a wealth and kindness and knowledge !
What a great organization!! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the affected animals. I too always think of that when I hear of natural disasters, my heart immediately goes to my little kitten and my parents dog and thank god they are safe and sound.
oh how i wish i lived in dhahran so i could enjoy your yummy vegan treats! this is a wonderful thing you’re doing, natasha! it’s great to feel empowered instead of sitting back watching the suffering and feeling unable to help.
Exactly! Thanks for your comment, Stef.
Hello from a fellow Aramcon
Could you send me a menu? xandymx@hotmail.com
Awesome that you’re doing this!
What a great idea! I love the organizations that pop up to help animals in situations like this. I feel for the people of course. But they’re getting help from loads of organizations…the animals (as in the case with Hurricane Katrina here) often get overlooked. Good job lady!
this seems like a really great cause!!
Bravo! Seriously, what an unbelievably thoughtful and giving thing to do. If I were in the area, you know I’d buy out everything you had.
You’re awesome! What a kind and generous thing to do.
I’ll definitely be re-posting about this! I wish I lived near you so that I could buy a crapload of stuff from your store. I’m going to see if I can get the mom’s credit card to donate straight to the site.
Thank you so much for doing this and spreading the word about this organization! I have so much respect and admiration for the veterinarians and supporters who are able to respond to a disaster like this, so thanks for letting us know how we can offer aid.
Wow, this is a great idea! I would def buy your cakes if I was in Saudi. I too have wished that I’ve been in the US to take part in the vegan bake sales for Haiti. But I’ve been thinking that I’m just going to do my own UK bake sale over here and sell them to friends and colleagues. All the best with your fund raising efforts. x
Yes! Your own fundraiser sounds awesome. Can’t wait to hear how it goes, good luck!
Thanks for the post. You’re right, animals are usually overlooked in times of crisis. I’ll be going to the website to see if I can leave a donation.
Great! Thanks, Alicia!
Great idea and post! It was heartbreaking dealing with displaced animals after hurricanes when I lived in Florida and I will scrape together more donations.
