Seitan is My Motor is a drool inspiring blog if I ever saw one. The desserts are stunning and keep me coming back over and over again. But can it ever get any better than Dark Chocolate Brownies with Caramel Frosting!?!?!
I love new and subversive twists on old favorites, especially when it is Fairy Tales that are getting the shake up. Fairy Tales are just one of the many ways that society’s patriarchal mores are instilled in us at a very young age. Ever notice that the stronger and more powerful a woman, the more evil she is presented as being? And the meek, young, frail women always seem to need a heroic rescue from a big strapping man, don’t they? Doesn’t it get so dull? Well, the amazing writer over at Tales from the Velvet Chamber has re-imagined an old favorite magnificently. You must read each part of her retelling of Snow White, it is gorgeous.
Over at Bitch Magazine, the Biotic Woman asks Is Temple Grandin an activist? My answer? NO. At least not for animal welfare or animal rights. I commend Temple Grandin on the strides she has made as a woman working in a male dominated field, and as a person with autism working in an all too hostile world; but she is no friend of the animals. I cannot understand how someone who claims to have such a unique connection with animals can design slaughterhouses.
Vegan for the People is such a fantastic blog but I’m really blown away by the latest post: Potato Pancakes! Specifically, Czech Republic Bramborova Placka. My dad’s mother is from the Czech Republic so I consider it an act of honoring my heritage to make these amazing looking snacks! Hmmm….maybe these will be dinner tonight.
My husband Cody is not only a kick-ass vegan and feminist ally and goofy hilarious all around amazing best friend (gush!) he is also a brilliant musician. He has started his own blog chronicling his record label Captive Records, his musical adventures, and his efforts to record from home.
I write frequently on the topic of rape culture* but I’m not sure I’ve ever done it as succinctly and as forcefully as this post, Living in Rape Culture, from the ferociously tremendous blog Her Authority. I guarantee that if you are a woman and you read this post it will either bring you to tears or make you tremble with rage. Or, if you’re like me, it will make you do both.
*rape culture is a constellation of behaviors and attitudes embedded into patriarchal society. We are inundated with these attitudes from the moment we are born and they are often (but not always) expressed unconsciously, and they allow and encourage the oppression and subordination of women by maintaining an environment that is actively and overwhelmingly hostile and threatening to women. The behaviors include a spectrum of acts which function to keep women in an object role and perpetuate their fear. They include (but are not limited to) certain aspects of ‘chivalry’, victim-blaming, leering, intimidation, cat calls, intimidation, sexist remarks and jokes, sexual harassment, coercion, domestic violence, assault, rape, and the glamorous or humorous depiction of assault and rape in the media.

Voracious Vegan Flashback! You’ve got to try this amazingly rustic and savory Fava Bean, Garlic, and Dill Crostata. It is so easy to make and is a perfect lunch for this cold weather we’ve been having.

Thank you for all the great suggestions! I already thought, I’d never read fairytales to my childred, maybe I can change my opinion now?
That crostata is calling my name. It looks like the perfect winter food, warm, comforting, and I bet it tastes delicious!
My reading this week is all about Kafka. I love him and am rereading “the castle” right now.
Wow– that crostata looks amazing! Thanks for the links!
I am looking forward to these wrap-up posts now; thank you for providing such good links/information!
Delicious and thoughtful round-up!
My three-year old niece loves the villains! She claps and cheers for them and wanted to name her baby sister Ursula. I’m not sure if that means that she’s going to be a strong woman or that we should an eye on her… I really love revised fairy tales, I can’t wait to check it out!
Haha! That is great! Ursula is a great character and I do love the name, too. Hopefully it means she’ll be a strong women, and not an evil octopus/human hybrid.
Always love these posts! Looking forward to reading the Velvet Chamber piece and the blog from Her authority.
WOW, that looks amazing! Perfect is right!
Wow, I love the link to the post on living in rape culture. The writer puts the challenges women face so succinctly and with such strength and conviction. I’ve just written a brief blog post on anti-oppressive thinking but now I’m wishing I hadn’t published as it seems so tame! Ah well. Thanks for these wrap-ups, Tash. x
You are welcome Sarah! Thanks for reading and for your thoughtful comment. I find it REALLY difficult to write (or talk) succinctly. I tend to ramble because I feel like I haven’t made a good enough point. I love finding articles like the Her Authority one because she drives it straight home, no fuss, no muss, just pure awesome. Sometimes it is hard to really SEE all of the things that women have to face everyday, especially since most people think that sexism was a problem of the past, that we have all overcome. But when something is so embedded in the everyday fabric of life it can be hard to see, and even harder to eradicate.
P.S. I’ve just clicked that the “*” was your definition of rape culture rather than the blogger from Her Authority (doh). Such a great definition. So when I refer to “the writer” above I am referring to both you and the blogger from Her Authority
You MUST read Angela Carter’s “The Bloody Chamber.” Her feminist reworkings of fairy tales are so visceral and empowering. Well, read all of her stuff! “The Magic Toyshop” is hella creepy and “The Passion of New Eve” is very…1970s, I guess, but so vibrant and magical.
…very 1970′s but vibrant and magical? Shannon, you just spoke straight to my disco loving heart. I will definitely read her work, it sounds wonderful. You are so right – ‘visceral and empowering’. I can become so moved and overwhelmed by stuff like that. The ridiculous sexism we have to put up with is ingrained in us at such a basic level, to hear it totally transformed can be devastating…in a good way!
I absolutely adore your Weekly Wednesday wrap ups!!! I am excited for your husband too!!!! I am going to make sure to go over and read the blog, Her Authority… I am a little afraid to. I too am a protector of women and it angers me to the point I shake when I read about the degredation woman are put into…. My mother was a very strong woman, and suffered greatly for it. I would never want to see another woman go through what my mother did, just for being a woman……Thank goodness I married a protector of women! Chris has zero tolerance for any abuse of any woman!!!
Loved the crostata picture!!! Hugs!!!
I hope you like the Her Authority blog, it’s one of my favorites. Reading stuff like that can be so difficult, but I do it so I can add my voice to the conversation. Hopefully someday we will be so loud we can change the world!
Ooh, I will have to remember that fava bean recipe. I’ve never seen fava beans sold in Memphis, but I haven’t looked that hard. I did buy some over the summer at the Trader Joe’s in Nashville. If I stumble across more, I MUST make that crostini!
i agree about temple grandin! i am fascinated by her work and have listened to manyyyy radio interviews with her, and it’s obvious to me that she is not an animal activist. that being said, she is extremely interesting and great at what she does, but she is not a friend to animals as you say. i think she is an inadvertent advocate for people with autism though, just living as an example of someone who can be successful and function despite their disorder. sharing her experience has been really influential in getting more people to understand what autism is all about, and awareness is key in solving it!
Great comment, Stef! I definitely agree with you for her work raising awareness about autism. But from a vegan perspective….what she has done breaks my heart!
i totally agree with you on temple grandin, Tasha. i’m gonna have to check out the article, indeed. i love that you do a flashback in your wrap-ups – your crostata has me drooling – and so do Mihl’s brownies! both look amazing! so awesome on Cody’s blog! you better believe i’m checking it out! i hope your week’s been awesome so far! hugs to you!
I love your wrapups, Tasha b/c you inspire me and keep me reading blogs with substance; more than just another bowl of oatmeal with a dollop of nut butter on top. And I love you for keeping me in the loop of the thinking women’s blogs
xoxo
First, thanks for the mention! Appreciate it
I love your wrap-up posts! Lots of ideas and good food, so I’ll be back each week – great concept. I’ve thought the same way about Temple Grandin, by the way. I admire her empathy and career, but can’t help think she’s been used by the industry, even if she may make many animals’ final moments slightly less terrifying.
Great round-up! Enjoyed the thought provoking links and dark chocolate brownies.
love the round ups!! great eats mentioned and lots of interesting links!
I always love your round-ups, VV! A fabulous thing to look forward to each week. You have great taste all around!
I’m all over that crostata today!
